MILESTONE #9

Identification and integration of new software technologies

Always one step ahead with R&D

Alongside the Professional Services and Automotive Products departments, Research & Development (R&D) forms the third important pillar in the corporate structure of RA Consulting. Thanks to our long-standing connections with the scientific community, such as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), RWTH Aachen and the German Fraunhofer Institute, RA Consulting is regularly involved in pioneering research projects. As early as 2006, we carried out our first research project with Thomas Kotschenreuther (then still at the FZI, now Head of R&D at RA Consulting) with DiaLog.

In the mobility projects Real Driving Validation (RDV), RepliCar and TyreRoadNoise, we are currently working together with well-known OEMs such as Porsche and VW, Tier 1 suppliers such as Conti and Bosch, and industry partners such as HighQSoft and LiangDao. The aim here, for example, is to integrate telematics systems into vehicles and to transfer data from vehicles in real time. The consortium aims to use the project results to support manufacturers in improving vehicle performance and efficiency, or to provide them with data-based solutions for implementing international guidelines.

Dr. Frank Hantschel, who coordinates the BMWi-funded cooperation projects KisSME and RepliCar within RA Consulting, explains:

“With our in-depth expertise in the field of database development, telematics and teleoperation, we are making an important contribution to various projects funded by the German government or the EU. For example, in the KIsSME project, which was completed in 2023 and focused on the integration of AI technologies in vehicles and automated driving systems.”

Our Division Manager Thomas Kotschenreuther sees further advantages for the company in addition to innovation:

“For RA Consulting, working on current research and standardization topics, such as scenario-based testing, autonomous driving functions, new sensor technologies or software architectures, also has real added value in terms of corporate image. Both, our involvement in these important research projects and the corresponding technical talks at high-profile events, such as the Dresden Diagnostics Conference, the ASAM International Conference or the Aachen Colloquium Sustainable Mobility, significantly increase the general visibility and positive external perception of our company. We noticed this, for example, in the EU project ASIMOV, which was successfully completed in 2024”.

Due to increasing tasks, the R&D team at RA Consulting has grown to eight people to date. The colleagues there appreciate the versatility and high complexity of the research projects. Kathrin Frank, who joined RA Consulting through her masters thesis, always finds the exchange with other project partners at conferences and consortium meetings highly inspiring:

“It’s often the case that you learn about other interesting aspects at the meetings, but it always helps you to see the big picture,” says Kathrin, who is currently driving software developments in several research projects.

A success story from 1989 – 2024
