Diagnostic of e-vehicles: ZEVonUDS ist now available via DoIP

The DiagRA® D and Silver Scan-Tool™ diagnostic software from RA Consulting is fully compatible with J1979-3 (ZEVonUDS) and J1979-2 (OBDonUDS)
2025-07-01

The RA Consulting diagnostic tools, DiagRA® D and Silver Scan-Tool™, are fully compatible with J1979-3 (ZEVonUDS) and J1979-2 (OBDonUDS) for CAN. Now, communication with SAE J1979-3 via the DoIP transport protocol is also possible. This allows for the flexible, parallel diagnosis of multiple control units in electric vehicles, which is particularly valuable for new vehicle architectures (Software-Defined Vehicles – SDV).

Our Deputy Head of Automotive Products, Dr. Alexander Karmazin, explains: “In view of new legislation from CARB (California Air Resources Board) and Euro 7, several major automotive manufacturers asked RA Consulting for an independent tool to test the implementation of ZEVonDoIP prior to certifying new electric vehicle models. To this end, we developed a future-proof solution based on our proven diagnostic tools, DiagRA® D and Silver Scan-Tool™, in just a few months. The solution also allows communication with SAE J1979-3 via DoIP.”

Efficient diagnostic without major investment

The RA software enables the efficient diagnostic of electric vehicles without requiring a costly investment. To perform the diagnosis via DoIP, the vehicle can be connected to a computer using an inexpensive OBD-to-Ethernet plug, or optionally, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter. Otherwise, a CAN or PassThru interface is sufficient, as before.

This means that the proven RA Consulting diagnostic software, DiagRA® D and Silver Scan-Tool™, can be used for a wide range of applications. These include the development, testing, and certification preparation of vehicles with combustion engines, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs).

Maintenance contract and additional software

If you have an active maintenance contract for DiagRA® D or Silver Scan-Tool™, you can use ZEVonUDS and OBDonUDS directly in the new software versions (7.67.45). If you do not yet have a maintenance contract, you can sign one with us at any time.

Furthermore, we offer users of our DiagRA® D and Silver Scan-Tool™ the option to request the “CT ZEV” software from us free of charge. The CT ZEV tool is an alternative to the SAE J1699-5 tool. It can only be used for electric vehicles (ZEVonUDS) and currently supports CAN communication. We will begin implementing DoIP support in July. The additional CT ZEV software supports significantly more test cases than those defined in SAE J1699-5.

At a glance

What are the advantages of DoIP?

DoIP (Diagnostics over Internet Protocol) is often considered the key to modern vehicle diagnostics. Compared to CAN-based networks, DoIP offers significant advantages thanks to its higher bandwidth, lower latency, and easier scalability.

Using Ethernet significantly speeds up data transmission and enables the parallel programming and diagnostics of multiple control units. Therefore, the combination of automotive Ethernet and DoIP is the basis for forward-looking network architectures and is an essential component in developing connected driving and transforming toward more sustainable, environmentally friendly mobility.

New legislation and communication protocols for electric vehicles

The current CARB regulation (Section 1962.5, Title 13, California Code of Regulations) covers data standardization requirements for zero-emission light-duty vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles for model years 2026 and later. Similar requirements apply to Euro 7 and the planned China 7 standards.

Vehicle manufacturers must implement a set of new standardized diagnostic functions in accordance with SAE J1979-3 specifications. These new functions and their associated data must be accessible with any scan tool without requiring vehicle manufacturer-specific, user-specific, or tool-specific registration or authentication or other mechanisms that could restrict or limit user access. OEMs must verify that vehicles can properly communicate with all control units and any scan tool designed in accordance with SAE J1979-3.

To perform this test, OEMs must use an external device (scan tool) approved by the Executive Officer at least 30 days prior the test.

As part of this application, manufacturers must provide data, specifications, or a technical analysis demonstrating that the external device verifies the vehicles’ ability to perform all required functions in accordance with the specifications of SAE J1979-3. An automated compliance testing tool may be used for this purpose.
