PRESS RELEASE
Diagnostics of electric vehicles now also possible via DoIP
Diagnostic tools from the German software manufacturer RA Consulting now enable communication with SAE J1979-3 via the DoIP transport protocol
Bruchsal RA Consulting GmbH, one of the leading specialists in vehicle diagnostic software, has equipped its proven products DiagRA® D and Silver Scan-Tool™ with the DoIP transport protocol. While the RA vehicle diagnostic tools were already fully compatible with J1979-3 (ZEVonUDS) and J1979-2 (OBDonUDS) for CAN, communication with SAE J1979-3 via the DoIP transport protocol is now also possible. DoIP allows for the flexible, parallel diagnostics of multiple control units in electric vehicles which is particularly advantageous for new vehicle architectures (Software Defined Vehicle – SDV). OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers can use the advanced diagnostic tools for a wide range of applications: from the development, testing, and preparation for certification of combustion engine vehicles to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) up to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs).
Communication via DoIP
DoIP (Diagnostics over Internet Protocol) is often considered the key to modern vehicle diagnostics. Compared to CAN-based networks, DoIP offers significant advantages thanks to its higher bandwidth, lower latency, and easier scalability.
Using Ethernet significantly speeds up data transmission and enables the parallel programming and diagnostics of multiple control units. Therefore, the combination of automotive Ethernet and DoIP is the basis for forward-looking network architectures and is an essential component in developing connected driving and transforming toward more sustainable, environmentally friendly mobility.
Our Deputy Head of Automotive Products, Dr. Alexander Karmazin, explains, “In view of new legislation from CARB (California Air Resources Board) and Euro 7, several major automotive manufacturers asked RA Consulting for an independent tool to test the implementation of ZEVonDoIP prior to certifying new electric vehicle models. To this end, we developed a future-proof solution based on our proven diagnostic tools, DiagRA® D and Silver Scan-Tool™, in just a few months. The solution also allows communication with SAE J1979-3 via DoIP.”
Another advantage of this new solution is that users of RA software do not need to make any major investments. The valuable DoIP feature is already implemented in the current release and can be used by users with a maintenance contract at no additional cost. Furthermore, vehicles can easily connect to computers for diagnostics via DoIP using an inexpensive OBD-to-Ethernet plug and, optionally, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter. Otherwise, a CAN or PassThru interface is sufficient, as before.
Background: New legislation and communication protocols for electric vehicles
The current CARB regulation covers data standardization requirements for zero-emission light-duty vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles for model years 2026 and later. Similar requirements apply to Euro 7 and the planned China 7 standards.
Vehicle manufacturers must implement a set of new standardized diagnostic functions in accordance with SAE J1979-3 specifications. These new functions and their associated data must be accessible with any scan tool without requiring vehicle manufacturer-specific, user-specific, or tool-specific registration or authentication or other mechanisms that could restrict or limit user access. OEMs must verify that vehicles can properly communicate with all control units and any scan tool designed in accordance with SAE J1979-3. To perform this test, OEMs must use an external device (scan tool) approved by the Executive Officer at least 30 days prior the test.
