Successful completion of the RepliCar project

Three years ago, we launched the publicly funded RepliCar project with partners including ANavS, Porsche AG, the Freudenberg Group, HighQSoft, the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg, the Research Center for Information Technology (FZI), the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and others. At the closing event in June, experts from academia and industry presented their final results to the project sponsor, TÜV Rheinland Group.

Reference sensing system for safe environmental perception
The RepliCar project aimed to develop a reference sensing system (known as “ground truth”) for automated driving that uses radar, cameras, and LiDAR to perceive the environment and ensure safe awareness of surroundings. RA Consulting, in collaboration with HighQSoft GmbH, was tasked with building a high-performance data platform for reference data to efficiently validate this sensor data. This platform ensures near-real-time, seamless, and loss-free data exchange from the vehicle to the server.
Use of DiagRA® X in the development of a data platform
During the development of this solution, our measurement and calibration tool DiagRA® X was also used as a prototypical validation tool compliant with the new ASAM MDF standard. It allows dynamic object list information and video data to be reliably stored in a file and exchanged in a standardized manner between different tools.
Telematics solution for data transmission from the vehicle to a backend
After testing and refining the solutions developed in collaboration with partners, the final pipeline was presented at the conclusion of the RepliCar project. This pipeline covered everything from data acquisition in the ROS system to validation in DiagRA® X.

Outlook
The project results will support the automotive industry by improving the safety, precision, and reliability of sensor systems for automated driving (ADAS). The goal is to detect and trace persistent perception errors more quickly. The systems developed by the partners were integrated into a Porsche research vehicle during the RepliCar project and now lay the groundwork for further testing and development.
The collaboration between ASAM’s standardization projects and the RepliCar project was a wonderful experience from which both sides benefited enormously, said our RepliCar Project Leader Dr. Frank Hantschel.
